Plastic-Eating Enzymes: How Engineered Proteins Could Solve the Global Plastic Crisis

Every year, over 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced worldwide, with less than 10 percent effectively recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, oceans, and ecosystems, taking centuries to decompose. But a revolutionary discovery in enzyme engineering is offering new hope.

The Discovery of PETase

In 2016, Japanese scientists discovered a bacterium called Ideonella sakaiensis that naturally produces PETase, an enzyme capable of breaking down polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the most common plastic used in bottles and packaging. While nature worked slowly, it opened the door to engineering a faster solution.

Engineering Super-Enzymes

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have since created enhanced variants of PETase that operate at industrial temperatures and degrade PET plastic in hours rather than years. In 2022, the French company Carbios opened the first industrial-scale enzymatic recycling facility in Clermont-Ferrand, capable of processing 50,000 tons of PET waste per year.

From Waste to Resource

The beauty of enzymatic recycling lies in its circular nature. Unlike mechanical recycling, which degrades plastic quality, enzymatic processes break PET down to its basic monomers, terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which can then be reassembled into virgin-quality plastic infinitely.

Challenges and Future Directions

Significant challenges remain, including scaling production of the enzymes, reducing costs to compete with virgin plastic, and extending the technology to other plastic types. However, with advances in AI-driven protein design, the discovery and optimization of new plastic-degrading enzymes is accelerating rapidly.

The convergence of biotechnology, AI, and chemistry is creating tools that could fundamentally reshape how humanity interacts with synthetic materials, turning one of our greatest environmental disasters into a solvable engineering problem.
